What are Travel Lines?
Travel Lines mark journeys by tube, train, and bus in London. They are a response to the vast amounts of time used (and perhaps wasted) in daily travel - the pen moves across the page while the vehicle is moving, and thus they record every moment spent in a journey and are a collaboration between the traveller-writer and the vehicle, its driver, and the condition of the track or road.
Margaret Cooter has spent her commuting time in drawing a continuous line at a constant speed while the tube train was in motion. These lines, shaped by the movement of the tube train over rough and smooth track, became part of her work for an MA at Camberwell College of Arts, London. As the project proceeded, station stops and bus stops were added; straightforward lines morphed into various configurations.
Representations of journeys on various transport routes have been printed onto fabric, and this handmade fabric is used in combination with other silks, linens, cottons and wools to make unique bags and holders for art, craft or sewing tools, to be used during travel or at a destination - products that allow you to carry not just your necessities but also your London journey with you.
